Promoting livelihoods in arts and culture in Egypt through musical education
The arts offer youth a chance to explore, grow and connect with their cultural heritage while creating pathways to promising new futures.
The technological forces that are re-shaping our world now mean that neighbours who live on the other side of the planet are as close to us as our neighbours who live across the street. In such a world, peace and progress require that we promote a pluralist agenda, that we invest in a Cosmopolitan ethic. These Music Awards aim to be an investment in that promotion.

Our Work
The Aga Khan Music Programme (AKMP)
AKMP’s education activities include teaching and learning methodologies, teacher-training mechanisms, talent-support centres, and performance and artist-in-residence programmes that provide students an opportunity to experience the creative challenges of intercultural music making.
AKMP’s education activities include teaching and learning methodologies, teacher-training mechanisms, talent-support centres, and performance and artist-in-residence programmes that provide students an opportunity to experience the creative challenges of intercultural music making. Residencies and workshops featuring musicians from AKMP’s artist roster are presented at many academic and cultural institutions throughout the world. AKMP has supported more than 300 music teachers.
AKMP promotes the revitalisation of cultural heritage both as a source of livelihood for musicians and as a means to strengthen pluralism in nations where it is challenged by social, political and economic constraints. Projects have included publication of a comprehensive textbook, The Music of Central Asia (Indiana University Press, 2016), a 10-volume CD-DVD anthology, Music of Central Asia, co-produced with Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, a worldwide performance and outreach programme that nurtures “East-East” as well as “East-West” musical collaborations, and a network of music schools and centres that develop innovative music curricula and curriculum materials.
